Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal Collection center in Taiwan (ACT) was newly set in July of 1998, in the campus of Taiwan Agricultural Research Institute and located in Wufeng, Taichung, Central Taiwan. This collection center was supported financially by Agricultural Council, Execcutive Yuan, Taiwan Provincial Government, and National Science Council. Culture collections in ACT are provided on request in various forms:
| I. Whole Inoculum | ![]() |
The cost of each culture (1, 2, above) is US$30 for faculty or full-time researchers. The inoculum used for commercial production will be US$60, but will vary based on the use of inoculum for research or for commercialization. The cost for bulk mixes (4 above) will vary with supply and thus must be negotiated at the time of the request. For education or thesis use, inoculum is available at free charge.
Once a request is received by ACT, stocks will be checked immediately and if sufficient quantity of inoculum is available, an invoice will be mailed to the solicitor. Monetary payment (check or money order) or a requisition or purchase order number must be received before cultures are shipped (preferably by fax or e-mail to speed processing of requests). The inoculum will be mailed usually within 72 hrs of receipt of payment.
If stocks are too low to mail out immediately, the solicitor will be contacted by phone, fax, or e-mail and informed of the situation. At that time, substitute cultures will be recommended if the inoculum is needed quickly or an estimated ship date will be provided.
In order to help solicitor to verify ACT inoculum, to purchase a voucher specimen for a requested item was recommended. After culturing an ACT isolate, solicitors may check the purity and identity of spore population by themselves.
II. Living spores |
|
Vials of cleaned spores of individual isolates can be requested for teaching or research purposes. Less inoculum is obtained, but the solicitor is guaranteed of spore purity and identity. This option has been used by molecular biologists and other researchers who have no experience with these fungi or do not understand their taxonomy.
The cost of each vial is identical to that of whole inoculum when supplied for research or commercial purposes. A free sample of spore solution could be available for teaching.
Vials of spores preserved in sodium azide also can be requested for teaching demonstrations or as vouchers in a research program. All vials will contain spores that have been stored in ACT's voucher collection for less than 30 days. If none are available, then spores will be extracted, prepared, and mailed within 72 hours.
The cost of each vial is US$10 to researchers and $20 to commercial companies. There is no charge to teachers or high school or undergraduate college students in Taiwan. For all others, a mail charge is assessed.
| IV. Aeroponic roots |
Sectioned roots produced by aeroponic system were also availble in ACT. These mycorrhizal roots contained hyphal system and spores. The roots were sealed in ampules and dried by lyophilizer. Aeroponic roots of Glomus, Acaulospora, and Entrophospora were available at this moment. The cost of each ampule is US$40 to researchers and $80 to commercial companies. As usual, free aeroponic root samples will be provided for teaching or thesis use.
