Variety Characteristics
The avocado is one of the most nutritious fruit in the world. Avocados contain mostly monounsaturated fat, which is a good source of energy. Also they are an excellent source of glutathione and vitamin E, which function as antioxidants to help protect against various disease and illness. In addition, they contain a large amount of lutein, which protects against age-related eye diseases.
The two distinct off-seasons of avocado production in Taiwan are from July to middle of August, and from October to early November. To fill these gaps, TARI’s affiliated Chiayi Agricultural Experiment Branch Station has developed Tainung No. 1 (Tasty Red) and Tainung No. 2 (Green Gold) through an endeavor of breeding in the past 18 years.
Avocado Tainung No. 1 has large fruit with high flesh ratio. The flesh is firm and sweet. The fat content is about 11%. The harvesting period is from middle of September to early November, which fits well the harvesting gap of prevailing varieties. And for Tainung No. 2, it has middle-size fruit. The flesh is golden yellow, firm and sweet, and is superior to established varieties. The fat content is about 13%. The harvesting period is from middle July to middle September, which fits well the harvesting gap of existing varieties. Both varieties have been registered for transfer to the farmers. It is expected that they will contribute to stabilizing the sustainable year-round production of avocados in Taiwan.
