Abstract:
Due to the limited availability of asparagus cultivars for domestic cultivation, a comparative cultivation trial was conducted on several green and purple cultivars, sourced both domestically and internationally, to identify high-yield and high-quality cultivars suitable for local climatic conditions. The results of a 3-year cultivation trial showed that‘Xigang’, ‘Atlas’, ‘Purple Passion’, and ‘Purple Tower’ exhibited superior average performance in total spear yield, premium-grade yield, premiumgrade spear rate, and the weight of a single premium-grade spear. Further stability analysis of all measured traits across years showed that ‘Atlas’ exhibited a stable trend in total spear yield, total spears, and premium-grade spears, followed closely by ‘Xigang’.‘Purple Passion’exhibited a stable trend in premium grade yield. Based on average yield and stability evaluation, ‘Atlas’ and ‘Xigang’performed better among the green asparagus cultivars, and purple asparagus cultivars exhibited potential adaptability to low-altitude greenhouse cultivation environments in southern Taiwan. Additionally, a correlation analysis of all measured traits indicated that the weight of a single spear was highly correlated with both the premium-grade yield (r = 0.93) and rate (r = 0.97). This finding suggests that spear weight could be used as one of the evaluation items for variety screening and the selection of parent materials in breeding.
