Abstract:

Using ICP-AES, Inductively Coupled Plasma-Atom Emission Spectrophotometer, contents of 2 detrimental heavy metal elements, Cd and Pb, and 10 mineral elements, P, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn, Cr and Ni from 17 medicinal species were analyzed and evaluated at Taiwan Agricultural Research Institute (TART). The analyzed results indicated that Pandanus odorus had significantly higher contents of Fe, Cd, Cr and Ni than those of others. But Dioscorea alata possessed less mineral contents of Ca, Mg, Mn, Zn, Ni, and Pb and Peteris ensiformis had less mineral contents of P, K, Ca, Mg, Mn, Cu, and Zn comparing to other medicinal plants. The highest contents of Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb among 17 medicinal plants tested in this study were 12.3, 47, 0.65, and 20.3 ppm, respectively which were not higher than the recommended dosage of acceptable daily intake by FAO/WHO in 1973.
