Abstract:

A field study was conducted to assess performance and biosafety of the phytase-gene transformed rice (Oryza sativa L.), strain AAN, originated from the cultivar Tainung 67.  Seedlings of phytase-transgenic and non-transgenic (control) rice were transplanted into an isolation field at the Agricultural Research Institute, Wufeng, Taichung, Taiwan, and compared for plant growth and yield.  There were two experiments in this study with the first experiment was carried out during the second crop season, from August to December, 2003 and the second experiment was carried out during the first crop season, from February to June, 2004.  Results showed that plant height, panicle length, panicle weight and seed yield of phytase-transgenic rice were significantly lower (P < 0.05) than those of non-transgenic rice.  Compared to the temperatures of 25℃ and 30℃, seed germination rate and germination speed were reduced in both transgenic and non-transgenic rice under the temperature of 15℃.  However, compared to the non-trangenic rice at 15℃, seeds of phytase-transgenic rice had a significantly lower rate of germination but a significantly higher speed of germination.  There was no significant difference (P > 0.05) in growth vigor of rice seedlings between phytase-transgenic and non-transgenic plants except for root length which was shorter in transgenic plants (6.5 cm) but longer in non-trangenic plants (8.97 cm) for the test at 25℃ in the experiment of Spring of 2004.
