Abstract:

    Carambola (Averrhoa carambola Linn.) Tainung No. 2 , originally numbered 76-B-10, was selected from the breeding lines, introduced from Malaysia in 1987. After 14 years of observation on quarantine, environmental adaptation, line comparison test, regional trial, postharvest treatment, disease and insect pest resistance, the superior horticultural characteristics of this line has been confirmed. The naming review committee named the new variety ‘Tainung No.2’ commercial name ‘Cheng Gang’ .The new variety produces large fruit with long peduncle. The fruit has a nice shape, waxy yellow skin, high sugar, low acid and fiber, crisp, fine texture and delicate taste. The flowers has shortstyles, pale purple red petal variegated with white strip and the leaflet shape is oblong. The fruit harvesting season is from July through March of the following year, 8-9 month long. The new variety is suitable for growing in southern part of Taiwan, especially in Kaoshiung and Pingtung area.
