Abstract:

    Indian jujube (Zizyphus mauritiana Lam.) Tainung No.1, a bud sport of Kaolung No.1, was found in Pingtung in 1991. Thereafter, Fengshan Tropical Horticultural Experiment Station, made a horticultural characteristics stabililty evaluation experiment on this new selected mutation cultivar in 1992 and 1993 and assured this new cultivar was a hereditary cultivar. Testing experiment in the new cultivar was conducted from 1994 to 1995. In the years of 1996 and 1997, a regional trial was carried out at YanPaw and Dahsheh. The results indicated that the yield and quality of this new cultivar were much better than the most popular commercial variety, Kaolung No.1. This cultivar was evaluated and designated as Tainung No.1 in 1998. Tainung No.1 has dark green leaf color, gray brown stem color, soft branch, few short thorn in the branch and easy to manage. It is an early mature variety with the characteristics of early and long period of flowering, high percentage of normal flower and stable yield. Average fruit weight is 130g. Fruit are long and square in shape, crispy, juicy and tasty. Average total soluble solids is 13.4˚Brix. and good for storage.
