Abstract:

Gladiolus is one of the top three cut flowers in Taiwan with cultivating acreage of about 550-600 ha/year. It is a popular cut flower favored by producers and consumers. Majority of the cultivars were introduced from foreign countries, but, the cut flower quality and adaptation need to be improved. In 1985, TARI collected cultivars from USA. ‘Polar Bear’ has white color flower with pink margin. Some hybrid lines were selected from the ‘Polar Bear’ selfed offspring. The selected line E9 which passed through long term evaluation in cut flower quality, adaptation and disease resistance was designated as Tainung No.1 by the Council of Agriculture, Executive Yuan on May 12, 2000. Its description is the following: Tainung No.1, needing 75-90 days from planting to harvest is a medium-late variety. The leaves with dark green color average 50-60cm in length, 4-6cm in width and 8-9 leaves after sprouting. Flower is pink margin and yellow center. The spike length of 110-130cm, 8-13mm diameter and with 14-15 florets reached the first grade. The shelf life is 9- 11days. Corm weight increased about 2-3times and 25-40 cormels per corm were harvested. It is resistant to ‘Net Rot’ (Pseudomonas marginata (McCull.) Stapp.) and ‘Gray Mold’ (Botrytis gladiolorum Timmermans.). Tainung No.1 is especially adapted to Ho-Lee and Bei-Do, the major growing areas in Taiwan.
