Abstract:

A part or total of 15 Dioscorea genotypes had been cultivated, analyzed, and evaluated at six counties in Taiwan in 1998. The results obtained from comparison test on the plant growth characteristics and yield potential of these Dioscorea plants indicated that 70W47, TNG1, TNG2, 70W34, 70W35, and 80W02 might be the most promising lines due to their high yield potential over 40 t/ha. Besides, the following Dioscorea genotypes could also be recommended as superior yam lines, such as 70W06, 70W17, 70W08, 70W42, 70W72, 83CM121, 70W75, 70W48, 70W70, 70W73, 70R22, 83CM302, 70R16 and 70R20. Experimental data also indicated that 70W35 had high enzyme activity of peroxidase (PO), polyphenol oxidase (PPO), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT), 70W34 had high activity of PO, PPO and SOD, TNG2 had high activity of PO, SOD and glutathione reductase (GR), and 70W47 had high activity of PPO, SOD and GR. The activity of SOD expressed by 70W47 is particularly higher than other genotypes. The results suggested that the following five yam lines, i.e. 70W35, 70W34, TNG2, 70W47 and 70W73, which possessed both properties of high yield potential and high SOD enzyme activity, could be developed for wider and further purposes.
