Abstract:

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of lime and borax applications on the quality and yield of wasabi (Wasabia japonica Matsum). The RCBD with 4 replications was designed including 2 factors each with 3 levels and 9 treatments combinations in total, namely : lime (0, 2 and 4 ton/ha),borax (0, 20 and 40 kg/ha). Some of the results were summarized as follows : Lime applied 2 or 4 ton/ha raised the soil pH significantly, and also increased the fresh weight of whole plant and rhizome ,but no significant difference was observed between the two liming treatments. Lime and borax applications reduced the severity of rhizome black rot of wasabi , however , the severity of rhizome streak disease was only lessened by borax application. The fresh weight of whole plant decreased significantly in summer season, especially for TN 1, it was induced by high temperature, because of the relatively low altitude (1270m) of Tapang area. There was a negative relation between the calcum content in rhizome and the severity of rhizome black rot, and the boron content of rhizome also had a negative relation with the severity of rhizome black rot in fall crop, while the severity of rhizome streak disease had a significant negative relation with the rhizome boron content. The calcium and boron contents in the rhizome of wasabi in the field experiment were lower than the plant which were cultivated in growth chamber .It is suggested that some unbeneficial factor of calcium and boron uptake existed in the fields. The fresh weight of whole plant and fresh weight of rhizome of wasabi cultivated in growth chamber increased significantly by lime and borax applications.
