Abstract:
A total of 4,791 rice varieties and breeding lines from 58 countries and agricultural improvement stations were tested for their reaction to blast disease at Chiayi AES International Rice Blast Nursery during the period from 1977 to 1994. The incidence of blast disease varied with seasons and years. In general, Indica rices were more resistant to the disease than Japonicas. Blast disease incidence recorded in the first crop was observed to be closely related to that recorded in the second crop though the degree of incidence in the second crop was more severe than that in the first crop. Some entries such as Tetep and others selected from the International Rice Blast Nursery which showed stable resistance to blast have widely used as important sources of resistance in breeding programs and given great contribution to rice breeding for blast resistance in Taiwan.
