Abstract:
Stem node explants derived from in vitro propagated shoots of four cultivars of Philodendron viz. ‘Tuxla’, ‘Imperial Green’, ‘Red Princess’, and ‘Pluto’ were irradiated with γ -rays (20 and 40 Gy) to induce variation. The explants were pre-cultured in liquid Murashige and Skoog’s (MS) medium supplemented with 2.0 mg/l N6-benzyladenine (BA) or 0.5 mg/l thidiazuron (TDZ) before irradiation. After irradiation, the explants were cultured on MS medium supplemented with 1.0 mg/l BA + 0.2 mg/l (- naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) for production of multiple shoots. Morphological variants were observed only in cv. ‘Red Princess’. Other three cultivars, though could be successfully propagated in vitro, failed to show any morphological variation after treatment with γ -rays.
