Pesticide-impregnated tablet bait to control tephritid fruit flies

Scientists at TARI have developed a dry tablet form of pesticide-impregnated bait that upholds its efficacy under rain to control tephritid fruit flies. The bait-tablet does not need to be dissolved in water or placed in an insect trap. It can be hung directly in the field to attract tephritid fruit flies for their extermination. The bait-tablet is rain resistant and mould preventive; after the rain, it still maintains its effectiveness to attract and kill tephritid fruit flies. Thus this form of bait-tablet is suitable for controlling tephritid fruit flies during raining season. The experiment showed that the bait-tablet had the potency to attract and kill both male and female tephritid fruit flies. Based on four experiments, the results showed that one bait-tablet could attract and kill a range of 136-355 tephritid fruit flies in a week during eight-week period; in one case, a single tablet attracted and killed 967 tephritid fruit flies in a week. The said bait-tablet is superior to the two commonly-used commercial baits in Taiwan and has both domestic and international marketing potentials. The special bait formulation smoothes the process of tablet formation, facilitates mass production of bait-tablets, and reduces the production cost. At this stage of development, a tablet making machine can make 2,400 bait-tablets in an hour in the laboratory.
