Bountiful varieties and superb quality of Phalaenopsis orchids from Taiwan render a strong competitive edge in the international orchid market, making Taiwan the leading exporter of Phalaenopsis orchids in the world. To strengthen its lead under the growing pressures of global competitiveness in the Phalaenopsis industry, one of the important marketing strategies for Taiwan is to meet the consumer demand for a useful and reliable system in predicting time to flowering. Towards this end, TARI scientists have employed high-precision plant growth chambers and controlled environment greenhouses to regulate the microclimate conditions such as temperature, light intensity, etc., to measure physiological responses and growth parameters, and to arrive at the required environmental conditions for seedling growth and flowering of a particular variety. Based on the research outputs, TARI scientists have developed a physiological monitoring service platform, and established standard monitoring process flow chart, monitoring facilities, and experimental methods for that purpose. The estimated service times for monitoring seedling growth and flowering time are two months and six months, respectively. This service platform started accepting the cases submitted through Taiwan Orchid Growers Association, Taiwan Orchid Breeders Society and Taiwan Floriculture Development Association in January 2012.
