Improved varieties

Tainung No. 3 (ChuenFeng)

Variety Characteristics

In 2010, Taiwan peach production reached 28,000 metric ton with an estimated value of NT$1.32 billion (US$440 million) from 2,404 hectares of planted area. Most of them are produced in the mountainous areas in central Taiwan and in small extent in the cooler lowland and hill areas in northern Taiwan. In order to lessen the environmental impact due to a large peach plantation in the mountainous areas, TARI initiated a breeding program in 1991 to develop varieties with low-chilling requirement, low acidity, large and brightly colored fruit, and maturity ranges from early to late to meet the needs of different locations in the lowland area. With the new developed peach varieties, currently, the lowland production arrives at 60% of the total production in Taiwan and is reaching to southern part of Taiwan. One of those improved varieties, Peach Tainung No. 3, was released in October 2009. Its commercial name ‘ChuenFeng’ was named for its early ripening and high yielding. It has high fruit setting rate. Fruits ripen between 81-90 days after blooming. Individual fruits are large ranging from 188 to 225 grams. The flesh is white, melting, sweet (12°Brix), and low titratable acidity (merely 0.4%), and has good flavor for an early-ripening peach.
